Scouting
Tavastin Liljat ry or TaLi is a Scout group founded in 1978 and based in Varissuo. We offer diverse scouting activities for everyone from children to adults. Our meeting place, known as kolo (“den”), is located in the downstairs of Varissuo Church at Kousankatu 6, 20610 Turku. You can find meeting times and group contact details in the Groups section.
What is Scouting?
Scouting is a global youth movement with around 45 million members in over 200 countries. In Finland, approximately 65,000 scouts take part in activities each year. Scouting is full of friendship, adventure, experiences in nature, and joy.
During meetings, hikes, and camps, we learn new age-appropriate skills such as cooking, crafting, orienteering, outdoor skills, first aid, and teamwork – without forgetting play and fun. We spend a lot of time outdoors, and on camps we often sleep outside.
Most scouting activities are organized by volunteers, and this is also the case in Tavastin Liljat. Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or ethnic background. Our activities are non-denominational and politically non-aligned. Our background organization is the Katariina Parish (Lutheran Church of Finland).
As stated by the Guides and Scouts of Finland, the aim of scouting is “to raise young people who have balanced personalities and lifestyles, are responsible and active, and think independently as members of local, national and international communities.” All of this is guided by the scouting programme, which you can explore further on the Scouts’ website.
Scout values
The values of scouting are reflected in the scout ideals. A scout strives to:
- respect others
- love and protect the environment
- be reliable
- build friendship across boundaries
- feel one’s responsibility and to take action
- develop oneself as a human being
- search for truth in life
What does scouting cost?
You are welcome to try scouting for free for three meetings. After that, you need to become a registered member. You can find instructions in the Membership section.
The annual membership fee for 2026 is 69.50€. Our groups meet once a week, and in addition, we organize trips and camps 2–3 times a year. The membership fee covers weekly activities, but trips and camps have a separate participation fee. For example, a two-night autumn or spring camp typically costs around 30€ in our group.
Membership also includes benefits such as Scout insurance, discounts in outdoor stores (e.g. Scandinavian Outdoor Store), and the regional Scout magazine Repolainen.
The central organization, the Guides and Scouts of Finland, may grant exemptions from the membership fee on financial, health, or social grounds – see more information on the Scouts’ website.
